supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2020 stood at 907,232, a decrease of 7.35% or 71,955 cards compares to 979,187 in the same period in 2019.
Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia
As at 31st December 2020, there are 67,218 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 45.13% or 55,281 cards compares to 122,499 in the same period in 2019.
The number of charge cards recorded in Malaysia is only 0.76% of the country's number of credit cards. The high membership fee with no credit facility available has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 40,947 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2020, a decrease of 42.60% or 30,394 cards compares to 71,341 in the same period in 2019. Whereas the number of
supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2020 stood at 26,271, a decrease of 48.65% or 24,887 cards compares to 51,158 in the same period in 2019.

91,888 cards with international debit functions, a decrease of 3.39% or 3,225 cards compares to 95,113 in the same period in 2019.
746,427 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 19.55% or 181,379 cards compares to 927,806 in the same period in 2019.
45,935,596 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, an increase of 3.81% or 1,683,910 cards compares to 44,251,686 in the same period in 2019.
The decrease of ATM cards is in accordance with the increase in cards with both domestic and international debit functions. All the banks in Malaysia are enforcing new measure, where all ATM cards holders
are urged and encouraged to change to cards with both domestic and international debit functions. This is inline with the usage of pin number at retails outlets, which means ATM cards holders no longer able to use their cards to transact at retail outlets in the country.
Whereas the number of cards with international debit functions has decreased further, most probably affected by the change from ATM cards to cards with both domestic and international debit functions.
By changing to cards with both domestic and international debit functions(replacing ATM card), consumers no longer need card with international debit functions to conduct overseas transaction.

Debit cards recorded 18.3 millions transactions(0.64 transactions per capita), a significant increase of 7.0 millions or or 61.94% compares to 11.3 millions in 2009. The percentage increase in debit cards transaction is
tremendous considering the 0.50% decrease in number of debit cards.

volume and once again shown the reduction in number of credit cards does not affect the growth in credit cards usage. This also translates into MYR270.60 per credit card payment transaction,
an increase compares to MYR251 in 2009; which also meant credit cards are used for increasingly larger amounts.
MYR4.7 billions(MYR164.34 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2010, an increase of €0.9 billions or 23.68% compares to MYR3.8 billions in 2009. This shows the reduction in number of charge cards and transactions
volume does not affect the total transactions value. This also translates into MYR1,000 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR760 in 2009; which also meant charge cards
are used for increasingly larger amounts. This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige
and does not mind with the extra fees.
