Credit Card in Malaysia Monthly Statistics 2021

As at 31st January 2021, there are 9,765,715 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.42% or 40,845 cards compares to 9,806,560 as at 31st December 2020. The 9,765,715 credit cards is made up of 8,864,308 principal credit cardholders and 901,407 supplementary credit cardholders.
43.1 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded in January 2021, with a total value of MYR$10.9 billions.

As at 28th February 2021, there are 9,703,619 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.64% or 62,096 cards compares to 9,765,715 as at 31st January 2021. The 9,703,619 credit cards is made up of 8,807,595 principal credit cardholders and 896,024 supplementary credit cardholders.
38.9 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded in February 2021, with a total value of MYR$9.6 billions.

Credit Card Loans in Malaysia Monthly Statistics 2021

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,466.644 millions as at 31st January 2021, a decrease of 1.63% or MYR588.934 millions compares to MYR36,055.578 millions as at 31st December 2020. A total of MYR11,558.592 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of January 2021, which is made up of MYR10,647.434 millions from Commercial banks and MYR911.158 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR34,608.525 millions as at 28th February 2021, a decrease of 2.42% or MYR858.119 millions compares to MYR35,466.644 millions as at 31st January 2021. A total of MYR10,179.184 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of February 2021, which is made up of MYR9,342.372 millions from Commercial banks and MYR836.812 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR34,564.057 millions as at 31st March 2021, a decrease of 0.13% or MYR44.468 millions compares to MYR34,608.525 millions as at 28th February 2021. A total of MYR12,875.864 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of March 2021, which is made up of MYR11,821.285 millions from Commercial banks and MYR1,054.579 millions from Islamic banks.

Credit Cards in Malaysia 2019-2020

As at 31st December 2020, there are 9,806,560 credit cards(0.30 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 3.02% or 305,426 cards compares to 10,111,986 in the same period in 2019.
There are 8,899,328 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2020, a decrease of 2.56% or 233,471 cards compares to 9,132,799 in the same period in 2019. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2020 stood at 907,232, a decrease of 7.35% or 71,955 cards compares to 979,187 in the same period in 2019.


Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia

As at 31st December 2020, there are 67,218 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 45.13% or 55,281 cards compares to 122,499 in the same period in 2019. The number of charge cards recorded in Malaysia is only 0.76% of the country's number of credit cards. The high membership fee with no credit facility available has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 40,947 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2020, a decrease of 42.60% or 30,394 cards compares to 71,341 in the same period in 2019. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2020 stood at 26,271, a decrease of 48.65% or 24,887 cards compares to 51,158 in the same period in 2019.

As at 31st December 2020, there are 46,773,911 debit cards(1.43 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 3.31% or 1,499,306 cards compares to 45,274,605 in the same period in 2019. The 46,773,911 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 91,888 cards with international debit functions, a decrease of 3.39% or 3,225 cards compares to 95,113 in the same period in 2019.
  • 746,427 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 19.55% or 181,379 cards compares to 927,806 in the same period in 2019.
  • 45,935,596 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, an increase of 3.81% or 1,683,910 cards compares to 44,251,686 in the same period in 2019.

The decrease of ATM cards is in accordance with the increase in cards with both domestic and international debit functions. All the banks in Malaysia are enforcing new measure, where all ATM cards holders are urged and encouraged to change to cards with both domestic and international debit functions. This is inline with the usage of pin number at retails outlets, which means ATM cards holders no longer able to use their cards to transact at retail outlets in the country.

Whereas the number of cards with international debit functions has decreased further, most probably affected by the change from ATM cards to cards with both domestic and international debit functions. By changing to cards with both domestic and international debit functions(replacing ATM card), consumers no longer need card with international debit functions to conduct overseas transaction.


Total Card Payments in Volume and Value

For 2020, there are 489.3 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(14.96 transactions per capita), a decrease of 20.8 millions or 4.08% compares to 510.1 millions in 2019. The 3 months lockdown due to covid-19 pandemic has directly affected the growth of credit card usage volume.
There are 3.3 millions charge card transactions(0.10 transactions per capita) for 2020, a decrease of 2.9 millions or 46.77% compares to 6.2 millions in 2019. The 45.13% decrease in number of charge cards and 3 month lockdown has significantly affecting the charge card usage volume.
Debit cards recorded 497.9 millions transactions(15.23 transactions per capita), an increase of 126.9 millions or 34.20% compares to 371.0 millions in 2019. A significant growth in debit card transactions, considering the 3.81% increase in number of debit cards. However, this is not surprising since debit card holders are now able to use their debit cards to make purchases.

The total credit card payments for 2020 is MYR$127.0 billions in value(MYR3,883.79 per capita), a decrease of MYR16.8 billions or 11.68% compares to MYR$143.8 billions in 2019. This is inline with the decrease in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR259.55 per credit card payment transaction, a decrease compares to MYR281.91 in 2019.
MYR10.3 billions(MYR314.98 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2020, a decrease of €2.9 billions or 21.37% compares to MYR13.1 billions in 2019. This is inline with the decrease in transactions volume of charge cards. This also translates into MYR3,121 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR2,113 in 2019; which also meant charge cards are used for increasingly larger amounts(47% larger amount than last year). This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige and does not mind with the extra fees.
Debit cards recorded MYR59.5 billions(MYR1,819.57 per capita) transactions in 2019, an increase of €7.1 billions or 13.55% compares to MYR52.4 billions in 2019. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.

Credit Card in Malaysia Quarterly Statistics 2020

As at 31st March 2020, there are 10,098,647 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.13% or 13,339 cards in three months period, compares to 10,111,986 as at 31st December 2019. The 10,098,647 credit cards is made up of 9,135,483 principal credit cardholders and 963,164 supplementary credit cardholders. For the three months ended 31st March 2020, 128.2 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$33.9 billions.

As at 30th June 2020, there are 9,903,672 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 1.93% or 194,975 cards in three months period, compares to 10,098,647 as at 31st March 2020. The 9,903,672 credit cards is made up of 8,964,347 principal credit cardholders and 939,325 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 2nd Quarter 2020, 98.8 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$25.0 billions.

As at 30th June 2020, there are 9,903,672 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 2.06% or 208,314 cards in six months period, compares to 10,111,986 as at 31st December 2019. For the six months ended 30th June 2020, 227.0 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$58.9 billions.

As at 30th September 2020, there are 9,843,748 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.61% or 59,924 cards in three months period, compares to 9,903,672 as at 30th June 2020. The 9,843,748 credit cards is made up of 8,923,114 principal credit cardholders and 920,634 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 3rd Quarter 2020, 131.5 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$34.1 billions.

As at 30th September 2020, there are 9,843,748 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 2.65% or 268,238 cards in nine months period, compares to 10,111,986 as at 31st December 2019. For the nine months ended 30th September 2020, 358.5 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$93.0 billions.

As at 31st December 2020, there are 9,806,560 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.38% or 37,188 cards in three months period, compares to 9,843,748 as at 30th September 2020. The 9,806,560 credit cards is made up of 8,899,328 principal credit cardholders and 907,232 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 4th Quarter 2020, 130.7 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$34.0 billions.

As at 31st December 2020, there are 9,806,560 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 3.02% or 305,426 cards in twelve months period, compares to 10,111,986 as at 31st December 2019. For the twelve months ended 31st December 2020, 489.2 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$127.0 billions.

Credit Card in Malaysia Monthly Statistics 2020

As at 31st January 2020, there are 10,114,675 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 0.03% or 2,689 cards compares to 10,111,986 as at 31st December 2019. The 10,114,675 credit cards is made up of 9,139,705 principal credit cardholders and 974,970 supplementary credit cardholders.

As at 29th February 2020, there are 10,107,131 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.07% or 7,544 cards compares to 10,114,675 as at 31st January 2020. The 10,107,131 credit cards is made up of 9,137,972 principal credit cardholders and 969,159 supplementary credit cardholders.

As at 30th April 2020, there are 10,032,065 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.66% or 66,582 cards compares to 10,098,647 as at 31st March 2020. The 10,032,065 credit cards is made up of 9,075,797 principal credit cardholders and 956,268 supplementary credit cardholders.

As at 31st July 2020, there are 9,876,915 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.27% or 26,757 cards compares to 9,903,672 as at 30th June 2020. The 9,876,915 credit cards is made up of 8,945,224 principal credit cardholders and 931,691 supplementary credit cardholders.

As at 31st August 2020, there are 9,868,895 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.08% or 8,020 cards compares to 9,876,915 as at 31st July 2020. The 9,868,895 credit cards is made up of 8,942,178 principal credit cardholders and 926,717 supplementary credit cardholders.

As at 31st October 2020, there are 9,841,228 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.03% or 2,520 cards compares to 9,843,748 as at 30th September 2020. The 9,841,228 credit cards is made up of 8,925,230 principal credit cardholders and 915,998 supplementary credit cardholders.

As at 30th November 2020, there are 9,835,910 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.05% or 5,318 cards compares to 9,841,228 as at 31st October 2020. The 9,835,910 credit cards is made up of 8,923,877 principal credit cardholders and 912,033 supplementary credit cardholders.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR41,110.881 millions as at 31st January 2020, a decrease of 0.20% or MYR80.937 millions compares to MYR41,191.818 millions as at 31st December 2019. A total of MYR13,525.030 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of January 2020, which is made up of MYR12,613.48 millions from Commercial banks and MYR911.55 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR40,113.604 millions as at 29th February 2020, a decrease of 2.43% or MYR997.277 millions compares to MYR41,110.881 millions as at 31st January 2020. A total of MYR11,467.694 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of February 2020, which is made up of MYR9,367.946 millions from Commercial banks and MYR735.274 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR38,325.347 millions as at 31st March 2020, a decrease of 4.46% or MYR1,788.257 millions compares to MYR40,113.604 millions as at 29th February 2020. A total of MYR10,103.22 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of March 2020, which is made up of MYR9,367.946 millions from Commercial banks and MYR735.274 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,501.036 millions as at 30th April 2020, a decrease of 7.37% or MYR2,824.311 millions compares to MYR38,325.347 millions as at 31st March 2020. A total of MYR6,543.783 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of April 2020, which is made up of MYR6,096.891 millions from Commercial banks and MYR446.892 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,301.970 millions as at 31st May 2020, a decrease of 0.56% or MYR199.066 millions compares to MYR35,501.036 millions as at 30th April 2020. A total of MYR9,116.860 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of May 2020, which is made up of MYR8,420.068 millions from Commercial banks and MYR696.792 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,598.912 millions as at 30th June 2020, an increase of 0.84% or MYR296.942 millions compares to MYR35,301.970 millions as at 31st May 2020. A total of MYR10,738.330 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of June 2020, which is made up of MYR9,917.225 millions from Commercial banks and MYR821.105 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,985.588 millions as at 31st July 2020, an increase of 1.09% or MYR386.676 millions compares to MYR35,598.912 millions as at 30th June 2020. A total of MYR11,980.180 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of July 2020, which is made up of MYR11,070.341 millions from Commercial banks and MYR909.839 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR36,374.504 millions as at 31st August 2020, an increase of 1.08% or MYR388.916 millions compares to MYR35,985.588 millions as at 31st July 2020. A total of MYR12,037.197 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of August 2020, which is made up of MYR11,106.251 millions from Commercial banks and MYR930.946 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR36,120.839 millions as at 30th September 2020, a decrease of 0.70% or MYR253.665 millions compares to MYR36,374.504 millions as at 31st August 2020. A total of MYR11,889.764 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of September 2020, which is made up of MYR10,971.228 millions from Commercial banks and MYR918.536 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,138.984 millions as at 31st October 2020, a decrease of 2.72% or MYR981.855 millions compares to MYR36,120.839 millions as at 30th September 2020. A total of MYR11,078.098 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of October 2020, which is made up of MYR10,227.328 millions from Commercial banks and MYR850.770 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,130.610 millions as at 30th November 2020, a decrease of 0.02% or MYR8.374 millions compares to MYR35,138.984 millions as at 31st October 2020. A total of MYR11,206.037 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of November 2020, which is made up of MYR10,338.003 millions from Commercial banks and MYR868.034 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR36,055.578 millions as at 31st December 2020, an increase of 2.63% or MYR924.968 millions compares to MYR35,130.610 millions as at 30th November 2020. A total of MYR13,526.718 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of December 2020, which is made up of MYR12,446.055 millions from Commercial banks and MYR1,080.663 millions from Islamic banks.

Credit Cards in Malaysia 2018-2019

As at 31st December 2019, there are 10,111,986 credit cards(0.31 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 2.06% or 212,637 cards compares to 10,324,623 in the same period in 2018.
There are 9,132,799 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2019, a decrease of 1.41% or 130,743 cards compares to 9,263,542 in the same period in 2018. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2019 stood at 979,187, a decrease of 7.72% or 81,894 cards compares to 1,061,081 in the same period in 2018.


Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia

As at 31st December 2019, there are 122,499 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 4.29% or 5,496 cards compares to 127,995 in the same period in 2018. The number of charge cards recorded in Malaysia is only 1.21% of the country's number of credit cards. The high membership fee with no credit facility available has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 71,341 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2019, a decrease of 5.46% or 4,120 cards compares to 75,461 in the same period in 2018. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2019 stood at 51,158, a decrease of 2.62% or 1,376 cards compares to 52,534 in the same period in 2018.

As at 31st December 2019, there are 45,274,605 debit cards(1.38 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 6.55% or 2,781,771 cards compares to 42,492,834 in the same period in 2018. The 45,274,605 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 95,113 cards with international debit functions, a decrease of 9.53% or 10,020 cards compares to 105,133 in the same period in 2018.
  • 927,806 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 74.95% or 2,775,347 cards compares to 3,703,153 in the same period in 2018.
  • 44,251,686 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, an increase of 14.39% or 5,567,138 cards compares to 38,684,548 in the same period in 2018.

The significant decrease of ATM cards is in accordance with the increase in cards with both domestic and international debit functions. All the banks in Malaysia are enforcing new measure, where all ATM cards holders are urged and encouraged to change to cards with both domestic and international debit functions. This is inline with the usage of pin number at retails outlets, which means ATM cards holders no longer able to use their cards to transact at retail outlets in the country.

Total Card Payments in Volume and Value

For 2019, there are 510.1 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(15.60 transactions per capita), an increase of 63.0 millions or 14.09% compares to 447.1 millions in 2018. The decrease of 2.06% in number of credit cards does not affect the growth of credit card usage volume.
There are 6.2 millions charge card transactions(0.19 transactions per capita) for 2019, an increase of 1.0 millions or 19.23% compares to 5.2 millions in 2018. A good growth in charge card transactions, considering the 5.46% decrease in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 371.0 millions transactions(11.35 transactions per capita), an increase of 125.3 millions or 51.00% compares to 245.7 millions in 2018. A significant growth in debit card transactions, considering the 6.55% increase in number of debit cards. However, this is not surprising since debit card holders are now able to use their debit cards to make purchases.

The total credit card payments for 2019 is MYR$143.8 billions in value(MYR4,397.55 per capita), an increase of MYR8.6 billions or 6.36% compares to MYR$135.2 billions in 2018. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR281.91 per credit card payment transaction, a decrease compares to MYR302.39 in 2018.
MYR13.1 billions(MYR400.61 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2019, an increase of €0.6 billions or 4.80% compares to MYR12.5 billions in 2018. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume of charge cards. This also translates into MYR2,113 per charge card payment transaction, a decrease compares to MYR2,403 in 2018; even though the average amount per transaction is slightly lower, the amount per transaction for charge card is 7 times more than credit card. This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige and does not mind with the extra fees.
Debit cards recorded MYR52.4 billions(MYR1,602.45 per capita) transactions in 2019, an increase of €12.1 billions or 30.02% compares to MYR40.3 billions in 2018. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.

Credit Card in Malaysia Quarterly Statistics 2019

As at 31st March 2019, there are 10,139,049 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 1.80% or 185,574 cards in three months period, compares to 10,324,623 as at 31st December 2018. The 10,139,049 credit cards is made up of 9,103,878 principal credit cardholders and 1,035,171 supplementary credit cardholders. For the three months ended 31st March 2019, 118.5 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$34.4 billions.

As at 30th June 2019, there are 10,168,764 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 0.29% or 29,715 cards in three months period, compares to 10,139,049 as at 31st March 2019. The 10,168,764 credit cards is made up of 9,147,444 principal credit cardholders and 1,021,320 supplementary credit cardholders. For the six months ended 30th June 2019, 240.7 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$69.1 billions.

As at 30th September 2019, there are 10,124,435 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 0.44% or 44,329 cards in three months period, compares to 10,168,764 as at 30th June 2019. The 10,124,435 credit cards is made up of 9,130,788 principal credit cardholders and 993,647 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 3rd Quarter 2019, 130.4 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$35.9 billions.

As at 30th September 2019, there are 10,124,435 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 1.94% or 200,188 cards in nine months period, compares to 10,324,623 as at 31st December 2018. For the nine months ended 30th September 2019, 371.1 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$105.0 billions.

As at 31st December 2019, there are 10,111,986 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.12% or 12,449 cards in three months period, compares to 10,124,435 as at 30th September 2019. The 10,111,986 credit cards is made up of 9,132,799 principal credit cardholders and 979,187 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 4th Quarter 2019, 139.0 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$38.8 billions.

As at 31st December 2019, there are 10,111,986 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 2.06% or 212,637 cards in twelve months period, compares to 10,324,623 as at 31st December 2018. For the twelve months ended 31st December 2019, 510.1 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$143.8 billions.

Credit Card in Malaysia Monthly Statistics 2019

As at 31st January 2019, there are 10,268,048 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.55% or 56,575 cards compares to 10,324,623 as at 31st December 2018. The 10,268,048 credit cards is made up of 9,214,794 principal credit cardholders and 1,053,254 supplementary credit cardholders.

Credit Card Loans in Malaysia Monthly Statistics 2019

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR39,939.626 millions as at 31st January 2019, an increase of 0.05% or MYR19.522 millions compares to MYR39,920.104 millions as at 31st December 2018. A total of MYR13,122.208 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of January 2019, which is made up of MYR12,329.795 millions from Commercial banks and MYR792.413 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR39,131.769 millions as at 28th February 2019, a decrease of 2.02% or MYR807.857 millions compares to MYR39,939.626 millions as at 31st January 2019. A total of MYR10,614.825 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of February 2019, which is made up of MYR9,935.478 millions from Commercial banks and MYR679.347 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR38,903.69 millions as at 31st March 2019, a decrease of 0.58% or MYR228.079 millions compares to MYR39,131.769 millions as at 28th February 2019. A total of MYR12,343.547 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of March 2019, which is made up of MYR11,568.705 millions from Commercial banks and MYR774.842 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR38,999.103 millions as at 30th April 2019, an increase of 0.25% or MYR95.413 millions compares to MYR38,903.69 millions as at 31st March 2019. A total of MYR12,101.365 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of April 2019, which is made up of MYR11,322.543 millions from Commercial banks and MYR778.822 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR39,061.336 millions as at 31st May 2019, an increase of 0.16% or MYR62.233 millions compares to MYR38,999.103 millions as at 30th April 2019. A total of MYR12,689.762 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of May 2019, which is made up of MYR11,868.942 millions from Commercial banks and MYR820.82 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR39,260.471 millions as at 30th June 2019, an increase of 0.51% or MYR199.135 millions compares to MYR39,061.336 millions as at 31st May 2019. A total of MYR11,763.411 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of June 2019, which is made up of MYR11,012.43 millions from Commercial banks and MYR750.981 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR39,209.889 millions as at 31st July 2019, a decrease of 0.13% or MYR50.582 millions compares to MYR39,260.471 millions as at 30th June 2019. A total of MYR12,670.601 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of July 2019, which is made up of MYR11,865.684 millions from Commercial banks and MYR804.917 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR39,489.383 millions as at 31st August 2019, an increase of 0.71% or MYR279.494 millions compares to MYR39,209.889 millions as at 31st July 2019. A total of MYR12,753.2 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of August 2019, which is made up of MYR11,934.079 millions from Commercial banks and MYR819.121 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR39,755.066 millions as at 30th September 2019, an increase of 0.67% or MYR265.683 millions compares to MYR39,489.383 millions as at 31st August 2019. A total of MYR12,345.395 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of September 2019, which is made up of MYR11,519.195 millions from Commercial banks and MYR826.2 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR39,670.968 millions as at 31st October 2019, a decrease of 0.21% or MYR84.098 millions compares to MYR39,755.066 millions as at 30th September 2019. A total of MYR12,945.360 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of October 2019, which is made up of MYR12,095.907 millions from Commercial banks and MYR849.453 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR40,307.677 millions as at 30th November 2019, an increase of 1.60% or MYR636.709 millions compares to MYR39,670.968 millions as at 31st October 2019. A total of MYR12,960.266 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of November 2019, which is made up of MYR12,084.793 millions from Commercial banks and MYR875.473 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR41,191.818 millions as at 31st December 2019, an increase of 2.19% or MYR884.141 millions compares to MYR40,307.677 millions as at 30th November 2019. A total of MYR14,392.886 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of December 2019, which is made up of MYR13,385.21 millions from Commercial banks and MYR1,007.676 millions from Islamic banks.

Credit Cards in Malaysia 2017-2018

As at 31st December 2018, there are 10,324,623 credit cards(0.32 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 4.70% or 463,419 cards compares to 9,861,204 in the same period in 2017.
There are 9,263,542 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2018, an increase of 5.24% or 461,470 cards compares to 8,802,072 in the same period in 2017. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2018 stood at 1,061,081, an increase of 0.18% or 1,949 cards compares to 1,059,132 in the same period in 2017.


Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia

As at 31st December 2018, there are 127,995 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.90% or 1,167 cards compares to 129,162 in the same period in 2017. The number of charge cards recorded in Malaysia is only 1.24% of the country's number of credit cards. The high membership fee with no credit facility available has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 75,461 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2018, a decrease of 0.53% or 401 cards compares to 75,862 in the same period in 2017. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2018 stood at 52,534, a decrease of 1.44% or 766 cards compares to 53,300 in the same period in 2017.

As at 31st December 2018, there are 42,492,834 debit cards(1.31 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 1.10% or 462,998 cards compares to 42,029,836 in the same period in 2017. The 42,492,834 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 105,133 cards with international debit functions, a decrease of 51.89% or 113,379 cards compares to 218,512 in the same period in 2017.
  • 3,703,153 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 20.34% or 945,738 cards compares to 4,648,891 in the same period in 2017.
  • 38,684,548 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, an increase of 4.10% or 1,522,115 cards compares to 37,162,433 in the same period in 2017.

The decrease of ATM cards is in accordance with the increase in cards with both domestic and international debit functions. All the banks in Malaysia are enforcing new measure, where all ATM cards holders are urged and encouraged to change to cards with both domestic and international debit functions. This is inline with the usage of pin number at retails outlets, which means ATM cards holders no longer able to use their cards to transact at retail outlets in the country.

Whereas the number of cards with international debit functions has significantly decreased, most probably affected by the change from ATM cards to cards with both domestic and international debit functions. By changing to cards with both domestic and international debit functions(replacing ATM card), consumers no longer need card with international debit functions to conduct overseas transaction.


Total Card Payments in Volume and Value

For 2018, there are 447.1 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(13.80 transactions per capita), an increase of 40.6 millions or 9.99% compares to 406.5 millions in 2017. The increase of 4.70% in number of credit cards help spurs the growth of credit card usage volume further.
There are 5.2 millions charge card transactions(0.16 transactions per capita) for 2018, an increase of 0.5 millions or 10.64% compares to 4.7 millions in 2017. A good growth in charge card transactions, considering the 0.90% decrease in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 245.7 millions transactions(7.58 transactions per capita), an increase of 83.5 millions or 51.48% compares to 162.2 millions in 2017. A good growth in debit card transactions, considering the 1.10% increase in number of debit cards. However, this is not surprising since debit card holders are now able to use their debit cards to make purchases.

The total credit card payments for 2018 is MYR$135.2 billions in value(MYR4,172.84 per capita), an increase of MYR9.6 billions or 7.64% compares to MYR$125.6 billions in 2017. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR302.39 per credit card payment transaction, a decrease compares to MYR308.98 in 2017.
MYR12.5 billions(MYR385.80 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2018, an increase of €1.5 billions or 13.64% compares to MYR11.0 billions in 2017. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume of charge cards. This also translates into MYR2,403 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR2,340 in 2017; which also meant charge cards are used for increasingly larger amounts. This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige and does not mind with the extra fees.
Debit cards recorded MYR40.3 billions(MYR1,243.83 per capita) transactions in 2018, an increase of €10.5 billions or 35.23% compares to MYR29.8 billions in 2017. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.

Credit Card in Malaysia Quarterly Statistics 2018

As at 31st March 2018, there are 10,032,771 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 1.74% or 171,567 cards in three months period, compares to 9,861,204 as at 31st December 2017. The 10,032,771 credit cards is made up of 8,962,829 principal credit cardholders and 1,069,942 supplementary credit cardholders. For the three months ended 31st March 2018, 108.0 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$33.3 billions.

As at 30th June 2018, there are 10,216,096 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 1.83% or 183,325 cards in three months period, compares to 10,032,771 as at 31st March 2018. The 10,216,096 credit cards is made up of 9,132,064 principal credit cardholders and 1,084,032 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 2nd Quarter 2018, 106.9 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$32.3 billions.

As at 30th June 2018, there are 10,216,096 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 3.60% or 354,892 cards in six months period, compares to 9,861,204 as at 31st December 2017. For the six months ended 30th June 2018, 213.8 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$65.6 billions.

As at 30th September 2018, there are 10,310,076 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 0.92% or 93,980 cards in three months period, compares to 10,216,096 as at 30th June 2018. The 10,310,076 credit cards is made up of 9,230,146 principal credit cardholders and 1,079,930 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 3rd Quarter 2018, 112.6 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$34.0 billions.

As at 30th September 2018, there are 10,310,076 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 4.55% or 448,872 cards in nine months period, compares to 9,861,204 as at 31st December 2017. For the nine months ended 30th September 2018, 326.4 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$99.6 billions.

As at 31st December 2018, there are 10,324,623 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 0.14% or 14,547 cards in three months period, compares to 10,310,076 as at 30th September 2018. The 10,324,623 credit cards is made up of 9,263,542 principal credit cardholders and 1,061,081 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 4th Quarter 2018, 119.4 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$35.7 billions.

As at 31st December 2018, there are 10,324,623 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 4.70% or 463,419 cards in twelve months period, compares to 9,861,204 as at 31st December 2017. For the twelve months ended 31st December 2018, 445.8 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$135.3 billions.

As at 31st December 2017, there are 9,861,204 credit cards(0.31 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 7.44% or 682,746 cards compares to 9,178,458 in the same period in 2016.
There are 8,802,072 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2017, an increase of 7.61% or 622,844 cards compares to 8,179,228 in the same period in 2016. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2017 stood at 1,059,132, an increase of 5.99% or 59,902 cards compares to 999,230 in the same period in 2016.


Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia

As at 31st December 2017, there are 129,162 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.62% or 803 cards compares to 129,965 in the same period in 2016. The number of charge cards recorded in Malaysia is only 1.31% of the country's number of credit cards. The high membership fee with no credit facility available has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 75,862 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2017, a decrease of 1.69% or 1,306 cards compares to 77,168 in the same period in 2016. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2017 stood at 53,300, an increase of 0.95% or 503 cards compares to 52,797 in the same period in 2016.

As at 31st December 2017, there are 42,029,836 debit cards(1.31 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 3.75% or 1,638,727 cards compares to 43,668,563 in the same period in 2016. The 42,029,836 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 218,512 cards with international debit functions, a decrease of 62.55% or 364,907 cards compares to 583,419 in the same period in 2016.
  • 4,648,891 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 60.75% or 7,195,141 cards compares to 11,844,032 in the same period in 2016.
  • 37,162,433 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, an increase of 18.95% or 5,921,329 cards compares to 31,241,104 in the same period in 2016.

The decrease of ATM cards is in accordance with the increase in cards with both domestic and international debit functions. All the banks in Malaysia are enforcing new measure, where all ATM cards holders are urged and encouraged to change to cards with both domestic and international debit functions. This is inline with the usage of pin number at retails outlets, which means ATM cards holders no longer able to use their cards to transact at retail outlets in the country.

Whereas the number of cards with international debit functions has significantly decreased, most probably affected by the change from ATM cards to cards with both domestic and international debit functions. By changing to cards with both domestic and international debit functions(replacing ATM card), consumers no longer need card with international debit functions to conduct overseas transaction.


Total Card Payments in Volume and Value

For 2017, there are 406.5 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(12.66 transactions per capita), an increase of 22.7 millions or 5.91% compares to 383.8 millions in 2016. The increase of 7.44% in number of credit cards help spurs the growth of credit card usage volume further.
There are 4.7 millions charge card transactions(0.15 transactions per capita) for 2017, an increase of 0.6 millions or 14.63% compares to 4.1 millions in 2016. A good growth in charge card transactions, considering the 0.62% decrease in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 162.2 millions transactions(5.05 transactions per capita), an increase of 54.7 millions or 50.88% compares to 107.5 millions in 2016. A good growth in debit card transactions, considering the 3.75% decrease in number of debit cards. However, this is not surprising since debit card holders are now able to use their debit cards to make purchases.

The total credit card payments for 2017 is MYR$125.6 billions in value(MYR3,912.77 per capita), an increase of MYR7.1 billions or 5.99% compares to MYR118.5 billions in 2016. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR308.98 per credit card payment transaction, a marginal increase compares to MYR308.75 in 2016.
MYR11.0 billions(MYR342.68 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2017, an increase of €1.3 billions or 13.40% compares to MYR9.7 billions in 2016. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume of charge cards. This also translates into MYR2,340 per charge card payment transaction, a decrease compares to MYR2,366 in 2016.
Debit cards recorded MYR29.8 billions(MYR928.35 per capita) transactions in 2017, an increase of €7.3 billions or 32.44% compares to MYR22.5 billions in 2016. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.

Credit Card in Malaysia Quarterly Statistics 2017

As at 31st March 2017, there are 9,294,246 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 1.26% or 115,788 cards in three months period, compares to 9,178,458 as at 31st December 2016. The 9,294,246 credit cards is made up of 8,281,812 principal credit cardholders and 1,012,434 supplementary credit cardholders. For the three months ended 31st March 2017, 96.7 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$30.1 billions.

As at 30th June 2017, there are 9,518,351 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 2.41% or 224,105 cards in three months period, compares to 9,294,246 as at 31st March 2017. The 9,518,351 credit cards is made up of 8,493,885 principal credit cardholders and 1,024,466 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 2nd Quarter 2017, 99.0 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$30.4 billions.

As at 30th June 2017, there are 9,518,351 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 3.70% or 339,893 cards in six months period, compares to 9,178,458 as at 31st December 2016. For the six months ended 30th June 2017, 195.7 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$60.5 billions.

As at 30th September 2017, there are 9,746,377 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 2.40% or 228,026 cards in three months period, compares to 9,518,351 as at 30th June 2017. The 9,746,377 credit cards is made up of 8,703,682 principal credit cardholders and 1,042,695 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 3rd Quarter 2017, 102.1 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$31.1 billions.

As at 30th September 2017, there are 9,746,377 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 6.19% or 567,919 cards in nine months period, compares to 9,178,458 as at 31st December 2016. For the nine months ended 30th September 2017, 297.8 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$91.6 billions.

As at 31st December 2017, there are 9,861,204 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 1.18% or 114,827 cards in three months period, compares to 9,746,377 as at 30th September 2017. The 9,861,204 credit cards is made up of 8,802,072 principal credit cardholders and 1,059,132 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 4th Quarter 2017, 108.7 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$34.0 billions.

As at 31st December 2017, there are 9,861,204 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 7.44% or 682,746 cards in twelve months period, compares to 9,178,458 as at 31st December 2016. For the twelve months ended 31st December 2017, 406.5 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$125.6 billions.

Credit Card in Malaysia Monthly Statistics 2017

As at 31st January 2017, there are 9,185,093 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 0.07% or 6,635 cards compares to 9,178,458 as at 31st December 2016. The 9,185,093 credit cards is made up of 8,182,795 principal credit cardholders and 1,002,298 supplementary credit cardholders.

As at 31st May 2017, there are 9,404,220 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 0.67% or 62,574 cards compares to 9,341,646 as at 30th April 2017. The 9,404,220 credit cards is made up of 8,385,507 principal credit cardholders and 1,018,713 supplementary credit cardholders.

For the three months ended 31st March 2016, 93.9 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$29.0 billions.

As at 30th June 2016, there are 8,928,674 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 1.82% or 159,326 cards in three months period, compares to 8,769,348 as at 31st March 2016. The 8,928,674 credit cards is made up of 7,961,604 principal credit cardholders and 967,070 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 2nd Quarter 2016, 94.1 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$29.1 billions.

As at 30th June 2016, there are 8,928,674 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 3.68% or 316,693 cards in six months period, compares to 8,611,981 as at 31st December 2015. For the six months ended 30th June 2016, 188 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$58.1 billions.

As at 30th September 2016, there are 9,041,156 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 1.26% or 112,482 cards in three months period, compares to 8,928,674 as at 30th June 2016. The 9,041,156 credit cards is made up of 8,053,058 principal credit cardholders and 988,098 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 3rd Quarter 2016, 95.5 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$29 billions.

As at 30th September 2016, there are 9,041,156 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 4.98% or 429,175 cards in nine months period, compares to 8,611,981 as at 31st December 2015. For the nine months ended 30th September 2016, 283.5 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$87.1 billions.

As at 31st December 2016, there are 9,178,458 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 1.52% or 137,302 cards in three months period, compares to 9,041,156 as at 30th September 2016. The 9,178,458 credit cards is made up of 8,179,228 principal credit cardholders and 999,230 supplementary credit cardholders. For the 4th Quarter 2016, 100.2 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$31.5 billions.

As at 31st December 2016, there are 9,178,458 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 6.58% or 566,477 cards in twelve months period, compares to 8,611,981 as at 31st December 2015. For the twelve months ended 31st December 2016, 383.8 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$118.5 billions.

Credit Cards in Malaysia 2015-2016

As at 31st December 2016, there are 9,178,458 credit cards(0.29 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 6.58% or 566,477 cards compares to 8,611,981 in the same period in 2015.
There are 8,179,228 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2016, an increase of 6.55% or 502,662 cards compares to 7,676,566 in the same period in 2015. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2016 stood at 999,230, an increase of 6.82% or 63,815 cards compares to 935,415 in the same period in 2015.


Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia

As at 31st December 2016, there are 129,965 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 8.93% or 12,747 cards compares to 142,712 in the same period in 2015. The number of charge cards recorded in Malaysia is only 1.42% of the country's number of credit cards. The high membership fee with no credit facility available has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 77,168 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2016, a decrease of 11.66% or 10,186 cards compares to 87,354 in the same period in 2015. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2016 stood at 52,797, a decrease of 4.63% or 2,561 cards compares to 55,358 in the same period in 2015.

As at 31st December 2016, there are 43,668,563 debit cards(1.38 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 3.50% or 1,476,903 cards compares to 42,191,660 in the same period in 2015. The 43,668,563 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 583,419 cards with international debit functions, a decrease of 90.54% or 5,586,764 cards compares to 6,170,183 in the same period in 2015.
  • 11,844,032 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 22.66% or 3,470,875 cards compares to 15,314,907 in the same period in 2015.
  • 31,241,104 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, a significant increase of 45.46% or 9,763,922 cards compares to 21,477,182 in the same period in 2015.

Total Card Payments in Volume and Value

For 2016, there are 383.8 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(12.11 transactions per capita), an increase of 24.2 millions or 6.73% compares to 359.6 millions in 2015. The increase of 6.58% in number of credit cards help spurs the growth of credit card usage volume further.
There are 4.1 millions charge card transactions(0.13 transactions per capita) for 2016, a decrease of 0.1 millions or 2.38% compares to 4.2 millions in 2015. A small decrease in charge card transactions, considering the 8.93% decrease in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 107.5 millions transactions(3.39 transactions per capita), an increase of 17.4 millions or 19.31% compares to 90.1 millions in 2015. The percentage increase in debit cards transaction is nearly twelve times more in comparison to 1.64% increase in number of debit cards.

The total credit card payments for 2016 is MYR118.5 billions in value(MYR3,738.17 per capita), an increase of MYR5.8 billions or 5.15% compares to MYR112.7 billions in 2015. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR308.75 per credit card payment transaction, a small decrease compares to MYR313.40 in 2015.
MYR9.7 billions(MYR287.10 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2016, an increase of €0.8 billions or 8.99% compares to MYR8.9 billions in 2015. This is despite the decrease in transactions volume and number of charge cards. This also translates into MYR2,366 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR2,119 in 2015; which also meant charge cards are used for increasingly larger amounts. This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige and does not mind with the extra fees.
Debit cards recorded MYR22.5 billions(MYR709.78 per capita) transactions in 2016, an increase of €2.5 billions or 12.5% compares to MYR20.0 billions in 2015. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.

Credit Card in Malaysia Monthly Statistics 2016

As at 31st January 2016, there are 8,673,900 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 0.72% or 61,919 cards compares to 8,611,981 as at 31st December 2015. The 8,673,900 credit cards is made up of 7,732,353 principal credit cardholders and 941,547 supplementary credit cardholders.

Credit Card Loans in Malaysia Monthly Statistics 2016

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR36,324.464 millions as at 31st January 2016, an increase of 0.78% or MYR280.863 millions compares to MYR36,043.601 millions as at 31st December 2015. A total of MYR9,729.317 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of January 2016, which is made up of MYR9,333.91 millions from Commercial banks and MYR395.407 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,358.52 millions as at 29th February 2016, a decrease of 2.66% or MYR965.944 millions compares to MYR36,324.464 millions as at 31st January 2016. A total of MYR8,383.139 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of February 2016, which is made up of MYR8,018.812 millions from Commercial banks and MYR364.327 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR34,956.935 millions as at 31st March 2016, a decrease of 1.14% or MYR401.585 millions compares to MYR35,358.52 millions as at 29th February 2016. A total of MYR9,432.99 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of March 2016, which is made up of MYR9,026.761 millions from Commercial banks and MYR406.229 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,008.327 millions as at 30th April 2016, an increase of 0.15% or MYR51.392 millions compares to MYR34,956.935 millions as at 31st March 2016. A total of MYR8,896.96 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of April 2016, which is made up of MYR8,475.081 millions from Commercial banks and MYR421.879 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,017.131 millions as at 31st May 2016, an increase of 0.03% or MYR8.804 millions compares to MYR35,008.327 millions as at 30th April 2016. A total of MYR9,326.811 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of May 2016, which is made up of MYR8,900.032 millions from Commercial banks and MYR426.779 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,323.686 millions as at 30th June 2016, an increase of 0.88% or MYR306.555 millions compares to MYR35,017.131 millions as at 31st May 2016. A total of MYR9,052.388 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of June 2016, which is made up of MYR8,619.258 millions from Commercial banks and MYR433.130 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,284.371 millions as at 31st July 2016, a decrease of 0.11% or MYR39.315 millions compares to MYR35,323.686 millions as at 30th June 2016. A total of MYR9,705.656 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of July 2016, which is made up of MYR8,520.569 millions from Commercial banks and MYR1,185.087 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,397.057 millions as at 31st August 2016, an increase of 0.32% or MYR112.686 millions compares to MYR35,284.371 millions as at 31st July 2016. A total of MYR9,465.037 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of August 2016, which is made up of MYR9,033.179 millions from Commercial banks and MYR431.858 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,561.878 millions as at 30th September 2016, an increase of 0.47% or MYR164.821 millions compares to MYR35,397.057 millions as at 31st August 2016. A total of MYR9,427.477 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of September 2016, which is made up of MYR8,987.207 millions from Commercial banks and MYR440.27 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR35,681.107 millions as at 31st October 2016, an increase of 0.34% or MYR119.229 millions compares to MYR35,561.878 millions as at 30th September 2016. A total of MYR9,369.79 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of October 2016, which is made up of MYR8,923.31 millions from Commercial banks and MYR446.48 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR36,035.736 millions as at 30th November 2016, an increase of 0.99% or MYR354.629 millions compares to MYR35,681.107 millions as at 31st October 2016. A total of MYR9,673.797 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of November 2016, which is made up of MYR9,194.726 millions from Commercial banks and MYR479.071 millions from Islamic banks.

Loans for Credit Card stood at MYR36,946.650 millions as at 31st December 2016, an increase of 2.53% or MYR910.914 millions compares to MYR36,035.736 millions as at 30th November 2016. A total of MYR10,899.467 millions Credit Card Loans disbursed for the month of December 2016, which is made up of MYR10,367.672 millions from Commercial banks and MYR531.795 millions from Islamic banks.

Credit Cards in Malaysia Quarterly Statistics 2015

As at 31st March 2015, there are 8,043,408 credit cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.06% or 4,986 cards in three months period, compares to 8,048,394 as at 31st December 2014. The 8,043,408 credit cards is made up of 7,163,526 principal credit cardholders and 879,882 supplementary credit cardholders.
For the three months ended 31st March 2015, 90.1 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$28.9 billions.

As at 30th June 2015, there are 8,222,358 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 2.16% or 173,964 cards in six months period, compares to 8,048,394 as at 31st December 2014. The 8,222,358 credit cards is made up of 7,331,572 principal credit cardholders and 890,786 supplementary credit cardholders.
For the six months ended 30th June 2015, 176.8 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$55.5 billions.

As at 30th September 2015, there are 8,362,437 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 3.90% or 314,043 cards in nine months period, compares to 8,048,394 as at 31st December 2014. The 8,362,437 credit cards is made up of 7,449,487 principal credit cardholders and 912,950 supplementary credit cardholders.
For the nine months ended 30th September 2015, 266.2 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$82.9 billions.

As at 31st December 2015, there are 8,611,981 credit cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 7.00% or 563,587 cards in twelve months period, compares to 8,048,394 as at 31st December 2014. The 8,611,981 credit cards is made up of 7,676,566 principal credit cardholders and 935,415 supplementary credit cardholders.
For the twelve months ended 31st December 2015, 359.6 millions of credit card payment transactions recorded, with a total value of MYR$112.7 billions.

Credit Cards in Malaysia 2014-2015

As at 31st December 2015, there are 8,611,981 credit cards(0.28 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 7.00% or 563,587 cards compares to 8,048,394 in the same period in 2014.
There are 7,676,566 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2015, an increase of 7.80% or 555,139 cards compares to 7,121,427 in the same period in 2014. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2015 stood at 935,415, an increase of 0.91% or 8,448 cards compares to 926,967 in the same period in 2014.
For the first time since 2010, the number of credit cards has increased after four straight years of decline, albeit a slow 0.40% growth. As predicted, a healthy growth in the number of credit cards is witnessed in Malaysia with the abolishment of credit card's annual service tax starting April 1, 2015, due to the introduction of GST in the country.

Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia
As at 31st December 2015, there are 142,712 charge cards issued in Malaysia, an small increase of 0.83% or 1,170 cards compares to 141,542 in the same period in 2014. The number of charge cards recorded in Malaysia is only 1.66% of the country's number of credit cards. The high membership fee with no credit facility available has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 87,354 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2015, an increase of 1.44% or 1,237 cards compares to 86,117 in the same period in 2014. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2015 stood at 55,358, a decrease of 0.12% or 67 cards compares to 55,425 in the same period in 2014.

As at 31st December 2015, there are 42,962,315 debit cards(1.39 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 3.68% or 1,523,792 cards compares to 41,438,523 in the same period in 2014. The 42,962,315 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 6,564,384 cards with international debit functions, an increase of 4.92% or 307,843 cards compares to 6,256,541 in the same period in 2014.
  • 15,314,907 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 8.76% or 1,469,654 cards compares to 16,784,561 in the same period in 2014.
  • 21,083,024 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, a significant increase of 14.60% or 2,685,603 cards compares to 18,397,421 in the same period in 2014.

The decrease of ATM cards is in accordance with the increase in cards with both domestic and international debit functions, where domestic and international debit functions is issued for new savings account holders, instead of cards with ATM. Plus effort to replace ATM cards with both domestic and international debit functions card is aggressively done with promotions such as cash back on purchases with the card.

Whereas the number of cards with international debit functions has continuously increased, following the previous years trend.

Total Card Payments in Volume and Value
For 2015, there are 359.6 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(11.60 transactions per capita), an increase of 13.9 millions or 4.02% compares to 345.7 millions in 2014. The increase of 7.12% in number of credit cards help spurs the growth of credit card usage volume further.
There are 4.2 millions charge card transactions(0.14 transactions per capita) for 2015, a decrease of 0.2 millions or 4.55% compares to 4.4 millions in 2014. This is a disappointing result considering the 0.74% increase in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 90.1 millions transactions(2.91 transactions per capita), a significant increase of 21.4 millions or 31.15% compares to 68.7 millions in 2014. The percentage increase in debit cards transaction is nearly nine times more in comparison to 3.68% increase in number of debit cards.

The total credit card payments for 2015 is MYR112.7 billions in value(MYR3,635.48 per capita), an increase of MYR7.2 billions or 6.82% compares to MYR105.5 billions in 2014. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR313.40 per credit card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR311.12 in 2014; which also meant credit cards are used for larger amounts.
MYR8.9 billions(MYR287.10 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2015, an increase of €0.3 billions or 3.49% compares to MYR8.6 billions in 2014. This is despite the decrease in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR2,119 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR1,955 in 2014; which also meant charge cards are used for increasingly larger amounts. This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige and does not mind with the extra fees.
Debit cards recorded MYR20.0 billions(MYR645.16 per capita) transactions in 2015, a significant increase of €5.2 billions or 35.14% compares to MYR14.8 billions in 2014. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.


Credit Cards in Malaysia 2013-2014

As at 31st December 2014, there are 8,048,394 credit cards(0.26 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.97% or 79,120 cards compares to 8,127,514 in the same period in 2013.
There are 7,121,427 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2014, a decrease of 1.77% or 128,416 cards compares to 7,249,843 in the same period in 2013. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2014 stood at 926,967, an increase of 5.62% or 49,296 cards compares to 877,671 in the same period in 2013. The growth in number of supplementary credit cardholders may due to the 50% discount on annual service tax for such card, MYR25 annual service tax instead of MYR50 for principal credit cardholders.
We predicted a healthy growth in the number of credit cards in Malaysia with the abolishment of credit card's annual service tax starting April 1, 2015, due to the introduction of GST in the country.

As at 31st December 2014, there are 141,542 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 8.87% or 13,771 cards compares to 155,313 in the same period in 2013. The number of charge cards recorded in Malaysia is only 1.76% of the country's number of credit cards. The burden of annual government service tax and membership fee has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 86,117 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2014, a decrease of 15.53% or 15,837 cards compares to 101,954 in the same period in 2013. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2014 stood at 55,425, an increase of 3.87% or 2,066 cards compares to 53,359 in the same period in 2013.

As at 31st December 2014, there are 41,438,523 debit cards(1.35 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 8.40% or 3,212,403 cards compares to 38,226,120 in the same period in 2013. The 41,438,523 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 6,256,541 cards with international debit functions, an increase of 13.36% or 737,461 cards compares to 5,519,080 in the same period in 2013.
  • 16,784,561 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 3.33% or 578,570 cards compares to 17,363,131 in the same period in 2013.
  • 18,397,421 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, a significant increase of 19.90% or 3,053,512 cards compares to 15,343,909 in the same period in 2013.

For 2014, there are 345.7 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(11.30 transactions per capita), an increase of 13.3 millions or 4.00% compares to 332.4 millions in 2013. The small increase of 0.40% in number of credit cards help spurs the growth of credit card usage volume further.
There are 4.4 millions charge card transactions(0.15 transactions per capita) for 2014, an increase of 0.4 millions or 10% compares to 4.0 millions in 2013. This is a significant growth considering the 8.81% decrease in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 68.7 millions transactions(2.25 transactions per capita), a significant increase of 19.3 millions or 39.07% compares to 49.4 millions in 2013. The percentage increase in debit cards transaction is nearly five times more in comparison to 8.36% increase in number of debit cards.

The total credit card payments for 2014 is MYR105.5 billions in value(MYR3,481.85 per capita), an increase of MYR5.8 billions or 5.82% compares to MYR99.7 billions in 2013. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR311.12 per credit card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR299.94 in 2013; which also meant credit cards are used for larger amounts.
MYR8.6 billions(MYR283.83 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2014, an increase of €1.4 billions or 19.44% compares to MYR7.2 billions in 2013. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR1,955 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR1,800 in 2013; which also meant charge cards are used for increasingly larger amounts. This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige and does not mind with the extra fees.
Debit cards recorded MYR14.8 billions(MYR483.66.60 per capita) transactions in 2014, a significant increase of €3.3 billions or 28.70% compares to MYR11.5 billions in 2013. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.


Credit Cards in Malaysia 2012-2013

As at 31st December 2013, there are 8,127,514 credit cards(0.27 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 0.28% or 22,506 cards compares to 8,150,020 in the same period in 2012.
There are 7,249,843 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2013, a decrease of 0.26% or 19,027 cards compares to 7,268,870 in the same period in 2012. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2013 stood at 877,671, a decrease of 0.39% or 3,479 cards compares to 881,150 in the same period in 2012.

Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia
As at 31st December 2013, there are 155,313 charge cards issued in Malaysia, an increase of 12.75% or 17,565 cards compares to 137,748 in the same period in 2012. The number of charge cards recorded in Malaysia is only 1.91% of the country's number of credit cards. The burden of annual government service tax and membership fee has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 101,954 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2013, an increase of 6.49% or 6,212 cards compares to 95,742 in the same period in 2012. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2013 stood at 53,359, an increase of 27.03% or 11,353 cards compares to 42,006 in the same period in 2012.

As at 31st December 2013, there are 38,226,120 debit cards(1.27 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 0.16% or 60,874 cards compares to 38,165,246 in the same period in 2012. The 38,226,120 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 5,519,080 cards with international debit functions, an increase of 15.29% or 731,982 cards compares to 4,787,098 in the same period in 2012.
  • 17,363,131 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 16.41% or 3,408,511 cards compares to 20,771,642 in the same period in 2012.
  • 15,343,909 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, a significant increase of 21.71% or 2,737,403 cards compares to 12,606,506 in the same period in 2012.

The decrease of ATM cards is in accordance with the increase in cards with both domestic and international debit functions, where domestic and international debit functions is issued for new savings account holders, instead of cards with ATM. Plus effort to replace ATM cards with both domestic and international debit functions card is aggressively done with promotions such as cash back on purchases with the card.

The number of cards with international debit functions has increased by 15%. Most probably due to difficulty in getting approval for credit card, as well as refusing to pay for the annual service tax, the number of prepaid cards has grow steadily and significantly.

Total Card Payments in Volume and Value
For 2013, there are 332.4 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(11.12 transactions per capita), an increase of 7.1 millions or 2.18% compares to 325.3 millions in 2012. This shows the 0.28% reduction in number of credit cards does not affect the growth of credit card usage volume.
There are 4.0 millions charge card transactions(0.13 transactions per capita) for 2013, a decrease of 0.1 millions or 2.44% compares to 4.1 millions in 2012. This is in accordance with the decrease in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 49.4 millions transactions(1.65 transactions per capita), a significant increase of 13.4 millions or 37.22% compares to 36.0 millions in 2012. The percentage increase in debit cards transaction is over five times more in comparison to 7.01% increase in number of debit cards.

The total credit card payments for 2013 is MYR99.7 billions in value(MYR3,334.45 per capita), an increase of MYR5.6 billions or 5.95% compares to MYR94.1 billions in 2012. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume. This also translates into MYR299.94 per credit card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR289.27 in 2012; which also meant credit cards are used for larger amounts.
MYR7.2 billions(MYR240.80 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2013, an increase of €0.7 billions or 10.77% compares to MYR6.5 billions in 2012. This shows the reduction in number of charge cards and transactions volume does not affect the total transactions value. This also translates into MYR1,800 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR1,585 in 2012; which also meant charge cards are used for increasingly larger amounts. This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige and does not mind with the extra fees.
Debit cards recorded MYR11.5 billions(MYR380.79 per capita) transactions in 2013, a significant increase of €2.9 billions or 33.72% compares to MYR8.6 billions in 2012. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.


Credit Cards in Malaysia 2011-2012

As at 31st December 2012, there are 8,150,020 credit cards(0.28 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 1.58% or 131,110 cards compares to 8,281,130 in the same period in 2011.
There are 7,268,870 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2012, a decrease of 1.72% or 127,204 cards compares to 7,396,074 in the same period in 2011. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2012 stood at 881,150, a decrease of 0.44% or 3,906 cards compares to 885,056 in the same period in 2011.
With strict approach taken by the Central Bank of Malaysia(BNM), the decrease in number of credit cards continued. The number of credit card applications has dropped from 4,829,200 in 2009 to 2,617,400 in 2012.

Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia
As at 31st December 2012, there are 137,748 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a significant decrease of 10.41% or 16,004 cards compares to 153,752 in the same period in 2011. The popularity of charge card has continued to suffer in Malaysia. It seems the annual service tax and membership fee has kept charge card to the affluent only.
There are 95,742 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2012, a decrease of 10.47% or 11,194 cards compares to 106,936 in the same period in 2011. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2012 stood at 42,006, a decrease of 10.27% or 4,807 cards compares to 46,813 in the same period in 2011.

As at 31st December 2012, there are 38,165,246 debit cards(1.29 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 9.07% or 3,172,331 cards compares to 34,992,915 in the same period in 2011. The 38,165,246 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 4,787,098 cards with international debit functions, an increase of 9.71% or 423,489 cards compares to 4,363,609 in the same period in 2011.
  • 20,771,642 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), a decrease of 7.38% or 1,653,902 cards compares to 22,425,544 in the same period in 2011.
  • 12,606,506 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, a significant increase of 53.67% or 4,402,744 cards compares to 8,203,762 in the same period in 2011.

The bank in Malaysia is now issuing cards with both domestic and international debit functions for new savings account holders, instead of cards with ATM. They are also continuously replacing ATM cards with both domestic and international debit functions. Enticing promotions such as cash back on purchases for cards with both domestic and international debit functions has help spurred the growth as well. This is reflected by the over 50% increased in the number of cards with both domestic and international debit functions.

Whereas the number of cards with international debit functions has continuously increased, following the previous years trend.

Total Card Payments in Volume and Value
For 2012, there are 325.3 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(11.10 transactions per capita), an increase of 8.4 millions or 2.65% compares to 316.9 millions in 2011. This shows the 1.70% reduction in number of credit cards does not affect the growth of credit card usage volume.
There are 4.1 millions charge card transactions(0.14 transactions per capita) for 2012, an increase of 0.2 millions or 5.13% compares to 3.9 millions in 2011. The is encouraging growth for charge card usage volume considering the 10.41% reduction in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 36.0 millions transactions(1.22 transactions per capita), a significant increase of 10.9 millions or 43.43% compares to 25.1 millions in 2011. The percentage increase in debit cards transaction is nearly five times more in comparison to 9.07% increase in number of debit cards.

The total credit card payments for 2012 is MYR94.1 billions in value(MYR3,211.60 per capita), an increase of MYR5.3 billions or 5.97% compares to MYR88.8 billions in 2011. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume and once again shown the reduction in number of credit cards does not affect the growth in credit cards usage. This also translates into MYR289.27 per credit card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR281.41 in 2011; which also meant credit cards are used for larger amounts.
MYR6.5 billions(MYR221.84 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2012, an increase of €1.1 billions or 20.37% compares to MYR5.4 billions in 2011. This shows the reduction in number of charge cards and transactions volume does not affect the total transactions value. This also translates into MYR1,585 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR1,385 in 2011; which also meant charge cards are used for increasingly larger amounts. This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige and does not mind with the extra fees.
Debit cards recorded MYR8.6 billions(MYR291.53 per capita) transactions in 2012, a significant increase of €2.3 billions or 36.51% compares to MYR6.3 billions in 2011. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.


Credit Cards in Malaysia 2010-2011

As at 31st December 2011, there are 8,281,130 credit cards(0.28 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, a decrease of 3.11% or 266,102 cards compares to 8,547,232 in the same period in 2010.
There are 7,396,074 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2011, a decrease of 1.72% or 129,059 cards compares to 7,525,133 in the same period in 2010. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2011 stood at 885,056, a significant decrease of 13.41% or 137,043 cards compares to 1,022,099 in the same period in 2010.
The decrease in number of credit cards in Malaysia is inline with the new, stricter rules and regulations implemented by the Central Bank of Malaysia(BNM).

Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia
As at 31st December 2011, there are 153,752 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a significant decrease of 14.86% or 26,827 cards compares to 180,579 in the same period in 2010. The number of charge cards in Malaysia continue to decline from a peak of 285,222 in 2009. Charge card has becoming less attractive since the the addition of an annual service tax by the Malaysia Government. Charge cardholders now have to pay extra fees every year asides from the annual membership fee commonly associated with charge card.
There are 106,936 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2011, a decrease of 17.33% or 22,422 cards compares to 129,358 in the same period in 2010. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2011 stood at 46,813, a decrease of 8.61% or 4,408 cards compares to 51,221 in the same period in 2010.

As at 31st December 2011, there are 34,992,915 debit cards(1.21 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, a significant increase of 16.87% or 5,051,783 cards compares to 29,941,132 in the same period in 2010. The 34,992,915 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 4,363,609 cards with international debit functions, a significant increase of 14.20% or 542,434 cards compares to 3,821,175 in the same period in 2010.
  • 22,425,544 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), an increase of 6.83% or 1,433,694 cards compares to 20,991,850 in the same period in 2010.
  • 8,203,762 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, a significant increase of 59.98% or 3,075,655 cards compares to 5,128,107 in the same period in 2010.

For two consecutive years, cards with both domestic and international debit functions have increased by nearly 60% since its inception in 2009. Apart from issuing Visa and MasterCard ATM cards for new savings account holders, banks in Malaysia has agressively promoting this type of card to existing domestic ATM cardholders as a replacement, with attractive incentives for swapping.

Total Card Payments in Volume and Value
For 2011, there are 316.9 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(10.93 transactions per capita), an increase of 22 millions or 7.46% compares to 294.9 millions in 2010. This shows the 3.94% reduction in number of credit cards does not affect the growth of credit card usage volume.
There are 3.9 millions charge card transactions(0.13 transactions per capita) for 2011, a significant decrease of 0.8 millions or or 17.02% compares to 4.7 millions in 2010. The charge card usage volume continue to slide with the 14.86% reduction in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 25.1 millions transactions(0.86 transactions per capita), a significant increase of 6.8 millions or or 37.16% compares to 18.3 millions in 2010. The percentage increase in debit cards transaction is about two times more in comparison to 16.87% increase in number of debit cards.

The total credit card payments for 2011 is MYR88.8 billions in value(MYR3,062.07 per capita), an increase of MYR9 billions or 11.28% compares to MYR79.8 billions in 2010. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume and once again shown the reduction in number of credit cards does not affect the growth in credit cards usage. This also translates into MYR281.41 per credit card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR270.60 in 2010; which also meant credit cards are used for larger amounts.
MYR5.4 billions(MYR186.21 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2011, an increase of €0.7 billions or 14.89% compares to MYR4.7 billions in 2010. This shows the reduction in number of charge cards and transactions volume does not affect the total transactions value. This also translates into MYR1,385 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR1,000 in 2010; which also meant charge cards are used for increasingly larger amounts. This may means only the affluent is now carrying the charge card, paying with charge cards for larger amount purchases; opting for the privileges and prestige and does not mind with the extra fees.
Debit cards recorded MYR6.3 billions(MYR217.24 per capita) transactions in 2011, a significant increase of €1.6 billions or 34.04% compares to MYR4.7 billions in 2010. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume.


Credit Cards in Malaysia 2009-2010

As at 31st December 2010, there are 8,547,232 credit cards(0.30 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, a significant decrease of 20.99% or 2,270,374 cards compares to 10,817,606 in the same period in 2009. The high reduction in number of cards is expected due to the Malaysian Government introduction of an annual service tax for credit and charge cards(RM50 for each principal card and RM25 for each supplementary card) effective Jan 1, 2010.
There are 7,525,133 principal credit cardholders as at 31st December 2010, a decrease of 21.41% or 2,049,438 cards compares to 9,574,571 in the same period in 2009. Whereas the number of supplementary credit cardholders as at 31st December 2010 stood at 1,022,099, a decrease of 17.77% or 220,936 cards compares to 1,243,035 in the same period in 2009.
In order to retain existing cardholders and attracting new applicants, credit card issuers in Malaysia have introduced cash back rewards card promotions en mass. This move will help cardholders to offset the annual service tax, as well as encouraging cards usage and loyalty amongst cardholders.

Charge Cards and Debit Card in Malaysia
As at 31st December 2010, there are 180,579 charge cards issued in Malaysia, a significant decrease of 36.69% or 104,643 cards compares to 285,222 in the same period in 2009. Charge cards has a higher declining percentage compares to credit cards, most probably due to the fact that charge cards normally comes with an annual fee; and with the addition of an annual service tax, charge cardholders have to pay extra fees every year.
There are 129,358 principal charge cardholders as at 31st December 2010, a decrease of 43.62% or 100,099 cards compares to 229,457 in the same period in 2009. Whereas the number of supplementary charge cardholders as at 31st December 2010 stood at 51,221, a decrease of 8.15% or 4,544 cards compares to 55,765 in the same period in 2009.

As at 31st December 2010, there are 29,941,132 debit cards(1.05 cards per capita) issued in Malaysia, an increase of 9.69% or 2,645,020 cards compares to 27,296,112 in the same period in 2009. The 29,941,132 debit cards can be further divided into:-

  • 3,821,175 cards with international debit functions, an increase of 5.99% or 216,121 cards compares to 3,605,054 in the same period in 2009.
  • 20,991,850 ATM Cards(domestic PIN-based debit card scheme), an increase of 2.64% or 539,246 cards compares to 20,425,604 in the same period in 2009.
  • 5,128,107 cards with both domestic and international debit functions, a significant increase of 57.04% or 1,862,653 cards compares to 3,265,454 in the same period in 2009.

Total Card Payments in Volume and Value
For 2010, there are 294.9 millions of credit card payment transactions in Malaysia(10.44 transactions per capita), an increase of 18.80 millions or 6.81% compares to 276.10 millions in 2009. This shows the 20.99% reduction in number of credit cards does not affect the the growth of credit card usage volume.
There are 4.7 millions charge card transactions(0.16 transactions per capita) for 2010, a decrease of 0.3 millions or or 6% compares to 5 millions in 2009. This is a minor decrease in charge card usage volume, taking into consideration of the 36.69% reduction in number of charge cards.
Debit cards recorded 18.3 millions transactions(0.64 transactions per capita), a significant increase of 7.0 millions or or 61.94% compares to 11.3 millions in 2009. The percentage increase in debit cards transaction is tremendous considering the 0.50% decrease in number of debit cards.

The total credit card payments for 2010 is MYR79.8 billions in value(MYR2,824.73 per capita), an increase of MYR10.5 billions or 15.15% compares to MYR69.3 billions in 2009. This is inline with the increase in transactions volume and once again shown the reduction in number of credit cards does not affect the growth in credit cards usage. This also translates into MYR270.60 per credit card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR251 in 2009; which also meant credit cards are used for increasingly larger amounts.
MYR4.7 billions(MYR164.34 per capita) is spent with charge cards in 2010, an increase of €0.9 billions or 23.68% compares to MYR3.8 billions in 2009. This shows the reduction in number of charge cards and transactions volume does not affect the total transactions value. This also translates into MYR1,000 per charge card payment transaction, an increase compares to MYR760 in 2009; which also meant charge cards are used for increasingly larger amounts.
